Resolve to Be a Better HVAC Owner this Year

San Antonio’s climate can take a lot out of your HVAC system year round and can leave you with high energy bills. Setting a few HVAC resolutions for the coming year will help you protect your system and keep your bills low.

Optimize Your HVAC System

If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, install one and use it to maintain energy efficient temperatures throughout the day. In summer, raising your air conditioner’s thermostat temperature above 78 degrees for 8 hours a day will reduce your cooling bills. In winter, lowering your thermostat temperature saves you, too.

If your system is more than 10 years old, it’s less efficient than recently manufactured models, so you could benefit from an upgrade. When you shop around for a new system, look for Energy Star-qualified models, especially those that hold the Most Efficient designation for the current year.

Water heating accounts for around 16 percent of the average home’s energy use. If your water heater feels warm to the touch, it’s wasting energy and should be insulated. Water heaters lose efficiency with age, so replacing your old water heater could lower your monthly energy bills.

To keep running at top efficiency, your system requires annual professional maintenance, so make sure this is on your list of HVAC resolutions for next year.

Help Your System Work More Efficiently

Lighten your A/C’s workload by reducing your home’s heat gain. Hang drapes with heat-reflective backings to keep the sun out on hot days and consider installing awnings on your south- and west-facing windows.

Replace incandescent lights in your home with more energy-efficient lights, such as compact fluorescent or LED lamps. In addition to using less energy, they also give off less heat, reducing the load on your A/C.

Talk with a heating and cooling technician about performing a home energy audit. The technician will bring in specialized tools to assess your home’s energy efficiency and identify areas for improvement.
